What is an Embryoscope?

Embryoscope is an advanced time-lapse imaging system used in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to monitor the development of embryos in a controlled environment. It combines a state-of-the-art incubator with an integrated camera system that captures continuous images of developing embryos at regular intervals without removing them from optimal culturing conditions. These time-lapse videos provide valuable insights into the embryo’s growth, allowing embryologists to select the most viable embryos for transfer.

The Embryoscope System

  1. Embryo Culture: The embryos are placed in individual culture dishes within the Embryoscope incubator after fertilization. The incubator provides optimal conditions for their growth, including temperature, humidity, and gas composition, ensuring an ideal environment for embryonic development.
  2. Continuous Imaging: The integrated camera system captures images of the embryos at regular intervals, typically every 5 to 20 minutes, throughout their development. These images are compiled into time-lapse videos, documenting the progression of cell division, embryo morphological changes, and other important developmental markers.
  3. Embryo Assessment: Embryologists analyse the time-lapse videos to evaluate the quality and developmental potential of the embryos. Continuous imaging allows for a comprehensive assessment of important parameters, such as cleavage patterns, cell division rates, and the timing of specific events, aiding in selecting embryos with the highest chances of successful implantation.
  4. Embryo Transfer: Based on the analysis of the time-lapse videos and in consultation with the patient, the embryologist selects the most viable embryos for transfer into the woman’s uterus. The selected embryos are carefully loaded into a catheter and transferred during a minimally invasive procedure.
  5. Post-Transfer Care: After the embryo transfer, the patient may be advised to continue with hormonal support and follow specific post-transfer guidelines. A pregnancy test is typically scheduled to determine the success of the procedure.
